The Royal Court are organising a six month season to take place in a currently disused shop in the Elephant and Castle shopping centre. The series, which begins next month, is part of the Sloane Square venue's Theatre Local project, which aims to take theatre to new audiences by putting on plays in new locations. Bloomberg have committed to a three year, £100k sponsorship of the project.
Royal Court artistic director Dominic Cooke explains: "It’s really about looking at how in the theatre we can reach beyond our buildings and make new relationships with new audiences and take our best work to the heart of the community. There are many, many people who are willing to engage with the theatre but don’t like the idea of going to a theatre building - find it intimidating, find it not in their orbit. There are number of people who just will not come to Sloane Square and we feel those people should have the opportunity to connect with the best of our work".
Opening the season on 3 March will be Royal Court's revival of Debbie Tucker Green play 'Random', first performed at Sloane Square back in 2008. Three more transfers will follow.
